Introducing new ways to organize, arrange, and navigate your projects in ftrack Studio
Managing and organizing data is at the heart of any production pipeline, and ftrack Studio is introducing new features to make it more flexible, powerful, and intuitive.
ftrack's most recent updates offer more ways to customize workflows, streamline navigation, and keep your projects running smoothly.
Here's what's coming and how it'll make life easier for you and your teams in ftrack Studio.
Tag smarter, work faster: Introducing native tagging in ftrack Studio
Tagging is now built directly into ftrack Studio, giving you a structured way to label and categorize assets, tasks, and projects with custom keywords. Previously, teams had to rely on manual workarounds to organize and filter information. Now, with native tagging, you can easily apply tags on the fly, search and filter, and integrate them into your workflows.
We've also enhanced the entity picker, making it easier to create, edit, and delete tags as needed, ensuring a more flexible and reliable way to organize projects.
Why this matters:
- Less manual effort – No need for workarounds; tagging is now a built-in feature, making organization more manageable.
- More accurate organization – Quickly categorize assets and tasks, improving searchability and clarity.
- Better collaboration – Keep data consistent across teams, ensuring everyone is on the same page.
Gain a complete picture: See attributes from related objects in Cross-Project Views using "Lookup"
The Overview dashboard has received a significant upgrade! You can now see connected data across projects by displaying attributes and custom attributes from related objects, such as parent or child items, directly in List and Card views. You can find this feature under the Settings tab in the Overview pages, under "Lookup."
With this update, you and your managers can see critical details—like Milestones and Tasks—at a glance without jumping between different sections.
Why this matters:
- Make faster decisions – Spot bottlenecks early by seeing parent attributes against child tasks, such as Milestone due dates, cascading across all connected items.
- See project progress in context – No more jumping between projects to check status. Cross-project data helps you connect the dots instantly.
- Tailor dashboards to workflow needs – Choose the most relevant data for different workflows, helping you and your managers stay focused on what matters.
Organize your work with multi-level grouping
Managing complex projects requires flexibility in how you view and structure your data. With multi-level grouping, ftrack Studio now offers even more ways to arrange your tasks, track progress, and gain the insights you need—fast.
With this update, you can group and organize data across multiple levels, making it easier to see the bigger picture or focus on specific details. Starting from a base entity—such as a task—you can apply additional grouping criteria to view related parent entities, helping you slice through data in a way that makes sense for your workflow.
For example, you can group tasks by assignee and then further organize them by shot or sequence, making it easy to understand workload distribution and project status at a glance. Plus, this feature integrates with saved views, so you can keep your custom layouts ready for future use.
Why this matters:
- More structured insights – Organize your tasks across multiple levels, helping you track workload, reassign tasks, and stay on top of progress.
- Faster decision-making – Easily filter and sort tasks to align with how you work, reducing the time spent searching for information.
- Tailored views for your workflow – Save advanced grouping configurations so you always have the proper perspective at hand.

A new navigation view: Less searching, more doing
EXPERIMENTAL
Navigating ftrack Studio is becoming faster and more intuitive with a new, opt-in layout that simplifies access to key areas like Overview, Projects, My Tasks, and Reports.
With this update, key ftrack Studio sections—Overview, My Tasks, Reports, and Recent Projects—have moved to a redesigned left-hand menu. This layout provides a cleaner, more spacious workspace, making it easier to dive into the details and focus on your work.
This update is about saving time, reducing friction, and making navigation effortless so you and your team can focus on what matters most.
Key features include:
- Find recent projects faster – Resume work without digging through lists, so teams can jump back in right where they left off.
- Smarter sub-menu navigation – Move between sections without losing context, making workflows smoother.
- Global search, always within reach – Search for anything in ftrack without leaving the current page, reducing disruptions.
- Drag-and-drop organization for customizable access – Arrange projects directly in the sidebar to match individual workflows and priorities.
- More intuitive account settings – We've grouped user settings, help guides, and support at the bottom of the new navigation interface for easier access.
This feature is currently under experimental status, meaning it's not enabled by default. To try it out, go to Account Settings > Try Our New Navigation.
