New Navigation Experience

As of September 2025, Ftrack Studio will be rolling out a new look to the UI navigation.

If you would like to opt out and continue to use the old UI navigation for now, you can jump ahead to this section of the article to learn how to do so.

The new navigation aims to simplify the user experience by making it more intuitive and consistent.

This has meant moving some things around:

A - The global search has been relocated to the top left side of the page.

B - Navigation to access the Overview, My Tasks, and Reports pages has been relocated to the left-side Outliner.

C - Overview dashboards have been relocated to display horizontally along a top menu.

D - Bookmarks have also been relocated to the left-side Outliner.

E - Recently viewed projects will remain visible in the Outliner.

F - The User account icon, where you can access your account preferences and/or the System settings, is now located at the bottom of the left-side Outliner.

The Outliner can still be resized by clicking and dragging the right edge, but now hovering over it will surface an icon that allows you to quickly collapse it completely.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the other changes.

Overview Dashboards

While there have been no changes to the My Tasks page or the Reports page, there have been some changes in how Dashboards are accessed from the Overview page.

Out-of-the-box Dashboards, as well as Saved Dashboards used to be displayed vertically along the left of the page.

These are now displayed horizontally in a top menu when viewing the Overview page.

Accessing Saved Dashboards

The first time you access the new navigation, you may not see any of your Saved Dashboards displayed.

To access these, click the 3-dot menu at the top right of the page, underneath the notification inbox.

Then select your Saved Dashboard from the list, or click Create dashboard to create a new one.

If you created the Dashboard and if your user permissions allow, hovering over an existing Dashboard will display available actions, such as editing the name, deleting, and sharing.

Pinning Saved Dashboards

A new feature included in the navigation update is the ability for all users to pin frequently used Dashboards to the top menu to access them more quickly.

To pin a Dashboard, hover over the Dashboard name and click the pin icon next to it.

You can pin as many Dashboards to the top menu as needed.  If there are more Dashboards pinned than fit the width of the page, click the right (<) and left (>) arrows at either side of the Dashboard menu, or scroll horizontally to access them.

Re-ordering Pinned Dashboards

Pinned Dashboards can now also be re-ordered in the top menu to ensure you don’t have to scroll to find the ones you use most frequently.

From the 3-dot menu, your pinned Dashboards will now be displayed above a dotted line in the drop-down.

Click on the name of any pinned Dashboard, and drag it into the order you would like it to appear in the top menu.

This will automatically update the order of your Dashboards in the top menu.

Note: It is not possible to change the order of the out-of-the-box Dashboards, or unpinned Dashboards.

Project Navigation

In the new navigation, recently accessed projects will always remain visible in the left-hand Outliner.

All active projects can still be accessed via the Overview page, or you can also now search for other projects by clicking the magnifying glass icon next to Recent projects, and typing in the project name.

Different icons will let you know if the projects are Active or Hidden.

Clicking the 3-dots in the search bar will open up additional filtering options to allow you to search all projects, only Active projects, or only Hidden projects.

Clicking on the project name in the Outliner will load the Task Spreadsheet for the project, as well as expand the project-specific Outliner.

Project Outliner

Clicking on a project name will expand the Outliner for that specific project, giving you access to your Client reviews, Lists, and project hierarchy.

Project Page

The project page has remained largely unchanged, but there are a few small differences.

A - Project Dashboards are now accessed via the 3-dot menu. The same new pinning and re-ordering features added for the Overview Dashboards can also be used for your Project Dashboards.

B - The Team icon has been relocated to the top-right of the project page.

C - The button to activate the Gantt view has moved next to the hierarchy filters.

Bookmarks

Bookmarks have now been enhanced to allow you to give each bookmark a unique name to better identify them.

To add a bookmark, navigate to the page you would like to bookmark, then click the plus sign (+) next to Bookmarks.

In the dialog window that appears type a Display name for your bookmark, then click Save changes.

You will then be able to click the bookmark name in the Outliner to navigate directly to the bookmarked page from anywhere in the UI.

Note: Since they do not have a unique URL, at this time it is not possible to bookmark specific Task Spreadsheet or Versions Page views.

Opting Out

If for the time being you would like to continue using our old navigation, you can do so by clicking on your user icon, then clicking Opt out of new navigation.

Should you like to reactivate the new navigation at any time in the future, click on your user icon again and select Try our new navigation.
