Under the Hood: Why We’re Improving the ftrack Event Server
In the world of high-end production, the best tools are often the ones you never have to think about. They sit quietly in the background, making sure the "magic" happens. At the heart of that silent machinery in Ftrack is the Event Server.
Today, we’re excited to share why we’re rolling out a significant update to this core component and what it means for the stability of your pipeline.
First things first: What is the Event Server?
Think of the Event Server as the central post office of your studio’s workflow. Whenever something happens in Ftrack - a status changes, a comment is added, or a new version is published - the Event Server picks up that "message" and instantly routes it to your custom scripts, automated folder creators, ftrack web application or 3rd party integrations.
It is the engine that enables real-time automation, ensuring that your pipeline reacts the moment an artist clicks "Submit."
Why the Update? The Two Pillars of Production
While the current system has served us well over the past 13 years, the demands of 2026 production environments require a more robust foundation. This update focuses on two non-negotiable areas:
1. Hardening our Security
In an era of increasing digital threats, "good enough" is no longer an option for security. By updating the Event Server, we are:
- Closing potential legacy vulnerabilities that may exist in older network libraries.
- Ensuring compliance with modern studio security audits, protecting your most valuable IP.
2. Performance at Scale
Modern pipelines are more demanding than ever. The new update introduces:
- Lower Latency: Faster message routing means your automations trigger faster
- Improved Concurrency: The ability to handle more demanding workloads.
- Resource Efficiency: Better resources utilization for customers running ftrack on-prem.
What This Means for You
For most users, this will be a seamless transition. For the pipeline TAs and developers out there, it means a more reliable, responsive, and secure playground for your code.
At Ftrack, we believe that a pipeline is only as strong as its quietest part. By fortifying the Event Server, we’re making sure it stays secure, and lightning-fast.
