Using Attributes

Definition of an Attribute

Within ftrack Studio, an Attribute is a piece of information related to the data or elements being tracked on your project.

Example: On a task, the Attributes you may want visibility on could be:

  • The status of the task
  • The user assigned to the task
  • The due date of the task

This information is stored in the Attribute Columns that are visible on the Tasks Spreadsheet.

Studio offers a range of common attributes out-of-the-box that you can use right away in your projects.

Additionally, if there is any information that you are required to track on your project that is not covered by the Attributes that are supplied in the workspace, you can follow this guide to create your own:

Adding and Removing Attributes in the Tasks Spreadsheet

In the “Default” view of your Tasks Spreadsheet, the following Attributes will be visible:

  • Tasks
  • Type
  • Status
  • Assignee
  • Description
  • Due Date
  • Bid Days

You may have more information you would like to reference, and perhaps some of these default Attributes are not relevant to the types of projects you are managing. To add or remove any Attributes, follow these steps:

Navigate to the gear icon on the far right of the Tasks Spreadsheet menu.

Click on the icon, and hover over Attributes.

Then hover over the category of Attributes you would like to add, to bring up the list of available attributes in that category.

A purple checkmark beside an attribute name indicates the Attribute is active in the Tasks Spreadsheet.

To add an Attribute, click the empty checkbox next to the Attribute name.

Once your updates are complete, clicking anywhere outside this menu will load your new Attribute selections in the Tasks Spreadsheet.

You may save these changes to update an existing Saved View or create a new one.

Please note: Any unsaved changes to your Tasks Spreadsheet will be lost if you browse to a new page or refresh your browser window.

Tip: Learn more about creating Saved Views.

Adding and Removing Attributes on the Versions Page

Attributes are accessible on the Versions page via the same gear icon as the Tasks Spreadsheet.

However, they will be displayed differently depending on whether you are using list view or thumbnail view.

List View

When adding and removing Attributes from the list view, they will be displayed in a similar manner to the Tasks Spreadsheet.

Thumbnail View

When adding and removing Attributes from the thumbnail view, they will be displayed in the card below the version’s thumbnail.

Adding Attributes for related Objects

You can also add Attributes for related Objects, such as the linked Task, to your Versions page. This allows you to surface data for the linked Object alongside data for the Asset Version itself.

It can be helpful when you would like to quickly reference relevant information without needing to navigate back to the Tasks Spreadsheet.

Example: You may want to quickly scan for the Due Date of the Task under which an Asset Version was published to prioritize reviewing media for a task that is due imminently.

Attributes Visible in the Sidebar

Regardless of the visible attributes in the Tasks Spreadsheet or the Versions page, specific Attributes will always be visible in the "Info" tab of the Sidebar when selecting an object in your project.

Adding and Removing Attributes on the Overview Page

When using Cross-project or Notes Dashboards on the Overview Page, Attributes can also be added and removed to tailor the information you are viewing.

Tip: Learn how to create Cross-project Views.

For both the standard cross-project views (Projects, Users, Tasks, Versions), or any custom dashboards you have created, attributes will be displayed on the card below the thumbnail image when using the Thumbnail View:

Or in columns when using the List View

You can add or remove Attributes by clicking on Settings Add Attribute.
